All About Chemical Peels (They're Not as Scary as You Think)
As a corrective skincare esthetician, one of the most common things I hear is, “I’m scared of chemical peels.” And I get it. TikTok, old-school horror stories, and dramatic peeling videos can make peels seem extreme.
But the truth is, modern chemical peels are safe, controlled, customizable treatments designed to support your skin, not traumatize it.
When done correctly and with proper preparation, peels are one of the most transformative tools we have in professional skincare.
What Exactly Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a professional treatment that uses specific acids to exfoliate the top layers of your skin. The goal is to remove damaged, dull, or congested skin cells and stimulate healthier, brighter, more even skin underneath.
Peels can improve the appearance of:
- Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
- Melasma
- Acne and acne scarring
- Uneven texture
- Fine lines
- Dullness
- Rough, thickened skin
The Levels of Chemical Peels
Not all peels are the same. In fact, the level of a peel determines how deep it goes and how much downtime you may experience.

1. Light Peels (Superficial)
What they do:
Gently exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin.
Who they’re ideal for:
First-timers, sensitive skin, maintenance treatments, acne, and dullness.
Downtime:
Minimal to none. You may experience light dryness or flaking for 1–3 days.
Benefits:
Fresh, brightened skin, smoother texture, better product absorption.
2. Medium Peels
What they do:
Target deeper layers of the epidermis to improve pigmentation, texture, and active breakouts.
Who they’re ideal for:
Clients with hyperpigmentation, acne scars, stubborn texture, melasma, or those wanting more dramatic results.
Downtime:
Moderate. Expect visible peeling around days 2–5. Skin may feel tight or dry before flaking begins.
Benefits:
More even tone, diminished dark spots, refined texture, clearer and smoother skin.
3. Deep Peels
What they do:
Penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin to target severe pigmentation, deeper wrinkles, and more significant damage.
Who they’re ideal for:
Clients with hyperpigmentation, acne scars, stubborn texture, melasma, or those wanting more dramatic results.
Downtime:
Significant. Redness, peeling, and sensitivity for 7–14+ days.
Benefits:
Dramatic lifting of pigmentation, major texture refinement, softening of lines.
What to Expect: Downtime and Aftercare
Downtime varies based on the peel level, your skin prep, and your skin’s natural response.
Here’s a general breakdown:
Day 1:
Skin may feel tight or warm, similar to a mild sunburn.
Days 2–3:
Tightness increases. Peeling may begin around the mouth and chin.
Days 3–5:
Visible peeling or flaking. This looks different for everyone, some lightly dust, some peel in sheets.
Days 5–7:
Most peeling ends. Skin may look fresh, bright, and slightly red.
Days 7–14:
Skin continues healing internally even if the surface looks good.
What NOT to do:
- Don’t pick or pull at peeling skin
- Don’t exfoliate
- Avoid heavy sweating for 48–72 hours
- Avoid direct sun exposure
What TO do:
- Hydrate consistently
- Keep your barrier supported
- Use SPF every single day
- Follow your homecare exactly as recommended
The Results You Can Expect
Chemical peels provide both immediate and progressive results. Most clients notice brighter, smoother skin after a single peel, but true transformation happens over a series.
After 1 peel:
- Brighter complexion
- Smoother texture
- Reduction in active breakouts
- Slight improvement in dark spots
After 3–6 peels (spaced 4–6 weeks apart):
- Noticeable fading of hyperpigmentation
- More even, balanced skin tone
- Reduced scarring
- Softer fine lines
- Controlled acne
- Stronger, healthier skin barrier
Peels are powerful, but they aren’t magic on their own. Consistent home care and prep matter just as much as what we do in the treatment room.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Most people can receive chemical peels with the right prep, but they’re not one-size-fits-all.
You’re a great candidate if you’re dealing with:
- Hyperpigmentation
- Acne or scarring
- Texture
- Dullness
- Uneven tone
- Thick, congested skin
You’re not a candidate if:
- You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
- You’re on certain medications (like Accutane)
- You have an active cold sore
- You’ve recently used retinoids without proper discontinuation
- Your skin barrier is compromised
This is why a virtual consultation or new client appointment is required before booking any advanced treatment like chemical peels.
